President and CEO
Shreveport, LA

Louisiana Association for the Blind (L.A.B.) has been shining a light for people with visual impairments through training, services and employment since 1927. Founded by the Lions Clubs as Shreveport Association for the Blind, L.A.B. has evolved from its original operation – training and employing the blind to make and sell brooms – to a multidimensional powerhouse for those with visual impairments.

Today, L.A.B. offers vision evaluations, children’s programs, independent living skills instruction, job training and employment placement through our Community Services division. An affiliate of National Industries for the Blind, L.A.B. participates in the AbilityOne® Program, a federal initiative to help people who are blind or have other severe disabilities find employment with nonprofit agencies that sell products and/or services to the United States government. L.A.B.’s direct labor workforce is made up of 80% visually impaired employees.

Approaching its 100-year anniversary in 2027, L.A.B. finds itself in a very healthy financial posture with the ability to continue to serve the community as a person-first employer, keeping visually impaired employees at the forefront. The organization is looking for its next leader to grow the manufacturing and services business lines through strategy-driven revenue diversification. Currently, revenues are heavily dependent on government contracts which has presented challenges during the pandemic.

The organization seeks a leader who can build unity around common purpose and heal the staff after a difficult few years of business disruption due to Covid-19. L.A.B. has the opportunity to invest in its future through infrastructure upgrades; development and cultivation of staff, many of whom are long-tenured, devoted employees; board development and recruitment; and by creating a vision for the near and long-term future.

The candidate we seek will be a proven and effective leader who is passionate about improving the quality of life for individuals with visual impairments and who possesses a keen understanding of the landscape of services to people with differing abilities including resource constraints and unmet needs. This entrepreneurial individual will bring leadership characterized by a visionary outlook; the ability to garner broad internal and external support; extraordinary success creating strong, effective, collaborative teams; sound business, financial and management acumen; the propensity to increase visibility and both government and philanthropic resources for the organization; and the fortitude to carry forward major new projects and initiatives.

With a strong focus on planning and management, the ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership through developing a compelling and inspired vision, mobilizing the organization in its achievement and utilizing strategic agility to anticipate future consequences and trends accurately.

Experience nurturing a culture of collaboration, innovation, excellence and transparency at all levels among staff in a complex enterprise is desired. The ability to lead employees in multiple locations as an effective team of closely coordinated, highly professional, accountable staff members is a must as is being open-minded and a history of thoughtfully receiving and considering new and different ideas. The successful candidate will be a person who understands and strongly values diversity within both staff and community bases.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated management acumen utilizing sound business principles. The preferred candidate will understand enterprise management and is knowledgeable of current and possible future policies, practices and trends affecting the organization. Given the diversity of revenue streams at the organization, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of successful financial management as well as negotiating large, complex agreements. Experience with board governance, development, management and engagement is expected.

As a strategic leader in fundraising and other revenue activities, the successful candidate will have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with funders, potential donors and other sources of financial support. Experience in or understanding of relationship-driven philanthropy involving individuals, foundations and corporations is preferred; personal experience soliciting resources is a plus. A creative, intuitive thinker with high emotional intelligence, a flexible personality and strong resiliency in sometimes difficult environments will serve the organization well.

A good listener, he/she/they will lead through influence, collaboration and innovation and always adhere to an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs in decision-making. The candidate will have a strong communication style, both verbal and written, and possess the ability to relate to a wide variety of constituents including elected officials; municipal, state and federal bureaucracies; businesses and civic groups; donors; regulators; and other advocates. Possessing political savvy, he/she/they will have experience maneuvering through complex political situations effectively, anticipating challenges and planning his/her/their approach accordingly.

A bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred. Affiliation with and leadership in local, state or national professional associations and continuing education and professional development is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is between $150,000 and 175,000 and will be commensurate with experience along with a board-designated annual bonus of up to 25% of base salary. L.A.B. offers a comprehensive benefits package, including but not limited to paid holidays, vacation, group health and dental, as well as a 401k plan.
